Migrate RvTK to Anki
RvTk (Reviewing The Kanji, and sometimes Koohii) is an invaluable website where students can share their Kanji stories and mnemonics. Perfect for the lazy and less imaginative, as I am. But once you finish RTK1, you might be tempted to switch to a more comprehensive SRS tool, like Anki. Among others, it provides online and offline reviewing, mobile apps for reviewing on the road, and many options to fine tune the SRS.
There are some references and online text on how to do it, although most are outdated. As of June 2011, here’s how you can migrate both your progress, and stories, to Anki.
1. Migrate RvTK’s progression:
- Download RTK1+3 on Anki’s public decks
- Download the koohii’s public plugin: type in koohii, current name is “Import progress from Koohii (see description for updates)”
- Disable sync for the Deck: Settings -> Preferences, Network tab, uncheck all, Saving tab, uncheck all.
- Go to http://kanji.koohii.com/manage/export and export flashcards
- Make sure the keywords don’t have a comma in there, it will break the (slight outdated) plugin
- Go to Settings -> Plugins -> Open plugins folder
- Open the file “Import progress from Koohii (see descrip.py” in a text editor
- Delete line 161 deck.rebuildQueue(), apparently the function doesn’t exist anymore
- Restart Anki
- File -> Import, select the file rtk_flashcards.csv, click Import. Anki will freeze for a few seconds, and then update your deck

- RvTK progress is now imported into the deck, re-enable sync if you are using the online storage
2. Migrate RvTK’s stories:
- Download stories from http://kanji.koohii.com/study/mystories
- Rename downloaded file to my_stories.txt
- Make sure your stories don’t have newlines
- File -> Import my_stories.txt
- Correctly map the fields, and click update

- Match Field 1 with Heisig number, and click update

- Stories are now imported!
